What I offer:
I use a variety of pedagogical strategies to engage participants and to provide a space for critical reflection and dialogue around effective instructional practice. Working within the mission and vision of each school to tailor and contextualize support, I design and deliver a variety of professional development opportunities to teachers and teacher teams.

Areas of focus
  • Mathematical content knowledge: What are you teaching? Understandings, skills, and dispositions we want students to develop.
  • Content pedagogy: How are you teaching? Instructional frameworks, strategies, and on-going practices to support student learning.
  • Assessment: How will you know/see what is learned? Practices and tools for analyzing student work to drive instructional decision-making.
  • Inquiry-Based learning: How do we structure teaching and learning at all levels to foster student agency, creativity, and meaningful engagement with the world around us?

Rebecca has been a great instructional coach. She helps me dig deeper in my content knowledge of each unit and lesson. She never settles for us simply knowing what the lesson or task is but prods us to know the underlining goals and stepping stones so we know why we are teaching those goals. She brings relevant class activities, class games, and educational reading to our meetings. I feel that she also cares for me because she has heard my frustrations and celebrated my achievements. I have fully enjoyed working with her and being coached by her.

Professional development
My workshops develop teachers as content experts, critical thinkers, and decision-makers able to tailor instruction to the changing needs of their students. Utilizing a variety of pedagogical strategies and resources, I engage participants in critical reflection and dialogue around both mathematical content and effective instructional practice. Teachers "learn by doing": participating in and reflecting on a variety of carefully curated mathematical investigations.  Topics for recent workshop series include:
  • Making Math Sense: Teaching Toward the Standards of Mathematical Practice
  • Assessment For Learning: Using an Asset-Focused Approach in the Math Classroom
  • Parts and Pieces: Developing Concepts, Models, and Strategies for Fraction Operations Grades 3-5
  • Thinking Routines in the Pre-School Classroom

Instructional coaching
I provide individualized, one-on-one coaching to teachers using a blended coaching model that incorporates elements of content-focused coaching and cognitive coaching. New and seasoned teachers build their capacity by engaging in observations and debrief conversations that include critical reflection, collaborative planning, and problem solving. To further develop teachers’ repertoire of instructional practices, I also conduct model lessons and facilitate collaborative observational rounds.

Collaborative planning
During planning time, I work with teachers and teacher teams to develop and unpack units of study that build upon student interest and engage them in active learning.  Curriculum development is facilitated within a backwards design, standards-based methodology. I support teachers and teams to be critical consumers of existing curriculum- to better understand the what? and the why? of their curricular resources so they can make informed instructional decisions at all levels of planning: year-long, unit-to-unit, and day-to-day.

Administrative consulting

Drawing upon my experience within “start-up” environments, including six developing middle schools, I provide strategic planning support to school administrators and teacher teams. I work collaboratively with school stakeholders to clarify the vision and goals for the school and to develop programming, structures, and policies aligned to that vision. Past projects include: curriculum review and selection, school-wide scheduling, school handbook development, family engagement programming, and more.
